Lenise Lujan Martinez

Traditional Straw Appliqué Artist

Diana Moya-Lujan

I have been creating art with the art form straw applique since 1996. I juried into Spanish Market in 1997.   I use traditional materials and combine other materials such as acrylic paint, commercial glue.  My designs are to create religious images, often combing them with churches of New Mexico. My work is in permanent collections at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, Hispanic Cultural Center, Museum of International Folk Art and the Museum at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.   Wisdom Archives created a YouTube video "Creating Nuestra Senora DE Guadalupe" of me which shows me working start to finish creating an image of Our Lady of Guadlupe.

Martha Varoz Ewing

Martha is a native of Santa Fe, New Mexico and a Traditional Spanish Market Artist in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  She feels she has found her passion in creating religious art in various forms and is inspired to create her work by the influence of her family’s artistic background and her strong religious upbringing.  She creates her pieces with a combination of tin and straw because she feels they compliment one another as the two elements were known as Poor Man’s Silver and Poor Man’s Gold. Her art is found in numerous private collections and museums which include The Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Museum of Spanish Colonial Arts, Expo NM Permanent Collection, Colorado Fine Arts Taylor Museum, Colorado Springs Colorado, and The Vatican in Rome.
