Colcha Embroidery

Julia R. Gomez has been doing Colcha embroidery for over 40 years.
She uses the wool from the Churro Sheep. She spins and weaves her own Sabanilla and uses natural dyes for color.
Her “Best of Show” at the 2010 Spanish Market is in the permanent collection of the Albuquerque Museum of New Mexico. She also has pieces at the International Folk Art Museum, the Hispanic Cultural Center, the Denver Art Museum and the New Mexico Heritage Arts Museum.
She has taken her work to the Belt and Road International Forum for Cultural Heritage Cooperation and Exchange and Handicrafts Fair in Jiangmen, China.
She participated in a cultural exchange program with the country of Cuba with the UNESCO specialized agency of the United Nations and the city of Santa Fe Arts Commission.
She is on her way to Washington D.C. in September to exhibit a piece at the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery.
Julia was a public school teacher in Santa Fe for 36 years and now a volunteer at El Rancho de las Golondrinas and teaches embroidery at the New Mexico Heritage Arts Museum
